AF&PA recognizes Washington state school for outstanding recycling efforts

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The recycling effort by Oscota High School in Westport, Washington has been honored. The American Forest and Paper Association (AF&PA) has presented the school with the 2014 School Recycling Award for Partnerships. The association lauded the school’s recycling efforts in the community.

The school had undertaken a range of recycling programmes with participation of students from all grades. The district-wide recycling efforts were assisted by local businesses as well. The campaigns witnessed unprecedented participation from the local community.

While presenting the award to the school, Jan Cleiland, recovered fiber manager at Northbrook, Illinois-based KapStone Paper and Packaging Corp appreciated the efforts of the school to educate students and members of the community about the importance and necessity of proper recycling.

Oscota School had started the recycling programme way back in 1992. During the initial period, it accepted commingled materials. Today, it accepts separate streams of baling old corrugated containers (OCC) and mixed paper. The school puts up articles in newspapers to educate the general public about recycling. It also announces collection events whereby local businesses are encouraged to drop off their OCC. It also conducts collection programmes for communities.
