Abandoned football ground finds new life as battery recycling center

ATLANTA (Scrap Monster): Georgia-based Metal Conversion Technologies LLC will utilize the abandoned Jimmy Carey football stadium in Weirton in order to expand its battery recycling business. The 8-acre facility will enable the company to satisfy growing recycling demand for vehicle battery and other Li-ion batteries.

The facility is expected to generate 12 jobs initially. According to the company, more job positions will be created as the facility expands into other metal recycling initiatives.

The company is reported to have entered into a deal with Business Development Corporation (BDC) of the Northern Panhandle, who currently holds possession of the stadium property. BDC had acquired the football ground and other two properties from the Hancock County Commission for a sum of $500,000 for the purpose of developing jobs and enhancing the economic growth of the region.

The groundbreaking for the new facility was held on Monday, November 10th.

Metal Conversion Technologies, LLCis a family owned and operated business. The company established its battery recycling facility in Cartersville in 2003. During the initial eight years of operation, the facility has recycled nearly 10,000 tons of batteries. The metal components recycled from the batteries are converted to ‘Remelt Alloy’ through patented Induction Melt Technology. This recycled product enjoys high demand in the country’s stainless steel market. The company has established itself as one of the low-cost leaders among facilities offering battery recycling services.
