NEW JERSY (Scrap Monster): Metalico Inc., New Jersey-based metal recycler plans to install a massive metal shredder in a former galvanizing plant. Metalico Inc. on Friday paid $3.2 million to buy the former Bethlehem Steel Galvanized Product Division Complex. The 177,500-square-foot plant sits on 44 acres at the corner of Route 5 and Lake Avenue.

The parcel is part of a larger 160-acre vacant property that a Buffalo-based real estate investment group bought from steel giant ArcelorMittal just two months ago. The local group, Great Lakes Industrial Development LLC, paid $3.5 million for the sprawling land on Dec. 20, with plans to redevelop the entire complex, buffalonews.com reports.

Metalico will install a heavy-duty metal shredder that will take up less than half of the space, leaving room for other scrap-metal activities. The shredder will handle old appliances, cars and light metal. The facility will employ 15 to 20 people, with more to be added if the business expands.

The enormous shredder going into the galvanized site can accept metal measuring up to 80 inches by 104 inches and can process 100 to 120 tons of scrap metal per hour. It will be powered by a 4,000-horsepower electric motor, buffalonews.com reported.
