Gold prices down in Asia as BoJ July minutes noted, U.S. debate ahead

 

  • Gold drifted weaker in Asia on Tuesday as minutes from the Bank of Japan's July meeting showed an easing push and investors awaited the outcome of a debate between the two main candidates for president in the U.S.

 

  • Overnight, gold prices swung between small gains and losses during North America's session on Monday, remaining near a two-week high as investors' attention turned from central banks to American politics ahead of the first U.S. presidential debate.

 

  • With just around six weeks to go until the November 8 U.S. presidential election, the market will turn its attention to the first of three televised U.S. presidential debates Monday night.

 

  • The 90-minute debate will begin at 9:00PM ET (01:00 GMT on Tuesday) at Hofstra University in New York, with Lester Holt of NBC News as moderator.

 

  • In crisis-hit Venezuela are spiraling ever lower as President Nicolas Maduro’s government seeks to stave off economic collapse. The reserves fell again in July, sagging to 6.07 million ounces from 6.25 million in June, according to the latest International Monetary Fund data. The hoard has dropped 31 percent in the first seven months of this year after sinking 24 percent in all of 2015.

 

  • Kazakhstan’s holdings expand to 7.85m oz in Aug., from 7.76m oz month earlier, data on IMF website show. Russia’s reserves rise to 49.07m oz, from 48.42m oz in July

 

  • Gold holdings in the SPDR Gold Trust, the biggest exchange-traded fund backed by bullion, were unchanged at 951.22 metric tons as of Sept. 26, according to figures on the company’s website.

 

Gold futures for December delivery fell $2.80, or 0.2 percent, to $1,341.30 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange.
