5086 Aluminum Sheet

5086 Aluminum Sheet

Characteristics

The 5086 aluminum sheet with H32 temper has an unpolished (mill) surface, meets American Society for Testing and Materials International ASTM B209, American Society of Mechanical Engineers ASME SB209, and SAE Aerospace Material Specifications AMS-QQ-A-250/7 standards, and has a standard tolerance. 5086 aluminum sheet exhibits higher strength than 5052 sheet and has excellent corrosion resistance in marine and salt water environments. It is easy to form, stamp and weld. It is not heat treatable. The aluminum has an H32 temper, meaning it has been strain hardened to a 1/4 hard temper and thermally stabilized.

This is an excellent marine environment corrosion resistant aluminum alloy. It is also a marine grade alloy used for its corrosion resistant properties as it is also very good on inter granular corrosion. The benefit of this alloy brings over standard alloys such as 5052 or 6061 is the corrosion resistance and better welding capabilities and good forming properties. 5086 is also in inventory as H32 temper which is a good standard engineering alloy, but it does not have the corrosion resistance of the other special marine tempers.

5086 is an aluminium alloy, primarily alloyed with magnesium. It is not strengthened by heat treatment, instead becoming stronger due to strain hardening, or cold mechanical working of the material.Since heat treatment doesn't strongly affect the strength, 5086 can be readily welded and retain most of its mechanical strength. The good results with welding and good corrosion properties in seawater make 5086 extremely popular for vessel gangways, building boat and yacht hulls.

Applications

5086 sheet is used for stamped components for processing equipment and pressure vessels, boat hulls, marine enclosures, cabinets and panels, shipping drums and hardware ,larger yachts. Used in vehicle armor, notably in the M113 Armored Personnel Carrier and M2 Bradley Infantry fighting vehicle. 5086 aluminum provides high corrosion resistance in marine environments and good weldability, and is stronger than 5052 aluminum.
